Coffee Kids is a non-profit organization started in 1988 by coffee roaster Bill Fishbein. Its mission is to help coffee-farming families improve the quality of their lives. They do this by partnering with non-governmental organizations in coffee-producing communities to create programs that reduce dependence on the coffee harvest and increase economic independence. They provide educational scholarships, health-care and health-care training, as well as training in accounting and business management. Their goal is to help families take control of their own lives and solve their own problems. Coffee Kids currently works in five countries: Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Peru.
When we opened in May 2005, Coffee Kids was raising money to help the coffee growing cooperatives in Sumatra to rebuild their communities--in essence their lives--after the recent tsunami. At that time Grounds for Change was selling their Sumatra Relief Blend. For every pound of Sumatran they sold they donated a percentage to assist in the rebuilding of those cooperatives. We kicked off our opening by doing the same. For every pound of Sumatran we sold we donated $1 to Coffee Kids.
In October 2007 we raffled off a fair trade basket valued at $275, the proceeds of which were donated to Coffee Kids. Meet the winner of our raffle.
We wholeheartedly support the work of Coffee Kids. They do not provide charity. They are helping people to help themselves with dignity.
